new in the shop!

I finally decided to make more of this dress that I love so much. I was receiving complements on it every time I wore it so I figured why the heck not, right?! Head over to my Etsy shop ShopSewcial to purchase one, I have a few made already, if they sell I'll definitely make more. I made them all size small but plan to make a pattern for a medium and a large as well. Check the measurements on the items page because it is a short dress! (That's me wearing it below and I'm about 5'5") If you're tall and want a longer length I can work with you on that. And if you happen to live here in Charleston you're welcome to pick it up instead of pay for shipping.

This is one of my go-to dresses, it's fantastic!

It is meant to be a summer dress but I wear it with leggings and boots during to cooler months,
I'll post a picture or two soon as an example.

{this one is kind of sheer so I listed it as a cover-up}

AND I made them these cute little tags too!

back to {nearly} black

{nearly} black
What do you think?

My natural hair color is a dark brown but it's still very obviously brown. If you've been following this blog you would have seen how I lightened my hair a few times this past spring/summer diy style.
{first and third try}

A lot of my decisions about my hair are made quite spontaniously. I don't tend to do much research, I should know by now that I should. This time around I meant to dye it back to my original medium/dark brown color that I was born with {er, grew into since I was actually bald until I was 2 and then had light/med brown hair most of my childhood}.

Anyhoo, I goofed, again.

However, I really love really dark hair, if black hair weren't so darn permanent I'd dye it black every winter. This time it turned out "nearly" black. In some lights it looks black, in others, it still looks very brown. Even though I goofed, I like the way it turned out.

What I learned:
the volume of the developer really does count...
the lower the volume, the more color will be deposited.
{should have used a 30 instead of a 20}

Waving Goodbye to my old hair color

Am I crazy for thinking about going blonde for the summer?
What if I promise to get it done professionally?!! Haha.

cute & easy dress! yes please.

Found a really cute print at Hancock's a while ago and it was way on sale and even though it was polyester I bought some. When I found this pattern {McCall's M6333} on sale more recently I knew it'd be perfect for this print! It claimed to be easy and it was! Oh, and I left the pockets off.

Almost done!

Finito!
Do you like how I made the pattern on the front/back panels vertical
and the side panels horizontal?

I've already worn this dress a handful of times...

With a long time friend of mine Chelsey at the pre-party
she held at her place before our high school reunion.
{ps Chels is A-mazing at interior decorating}
photo taken by another long time friend, Lauren.
{check out her ad blog lali adverts}

For a crisp November evening outfit I wore it with black leggings, my favorite 80's
black leather boots {thanks Mom}, this awesome new to me vintage yellow
dolman sleeve Ann Taylor jacket, my go-to scarf and mock Chanel crossbody bag.

Easy to make, and easy to wear!

Only flaw is that it gets a little static-y due to the polyester fibers, ugh.
Should be fine in the warmer months though.

Other than that, I love it! What do you think?

oh, just another photoshoot on the beach

Oh, just another photoshoot on the beach. No big deal.
Haha.
But seriously it was fun pretending to be a model while my sister took photos again.

Like I said a few days ago she came back to Charleston with me after my last trip home to spend about a week with me here because we don't get to spend much time together just the two of us anymore. It was a lot of fun having her here, we didn't even really do all that much and we still had a great time. The weather wasn't great this week but on one of the nicer days I took her down to Edisto Island to the Botany Bay Plantation Beach. It's one of my favorite places around here, it's a bit of a drive but it's well worth it! Shani really liked it which is amazing because even though she loves the water (she was a competative swimmer when we were kids, and a good one too) she's never been too fond of the beach. It was a great opportunity for her to get some more experience shooting outside since it was so sunny!

Here are a few of the photos. Visit her full post here for more!

What's kind of funny is that everything I wore {except for the starfish bracelet} are things I've had FOREVER! The dress directly above is a dress that Shani and I used to have in our dressup box as kids, our mother must have found it at a thift store way back in the day since we were always wanting to wear her clothes to play in... and today, it fits me perfectly! It's on my list of things to duplicate because it's even though I love the dress, the print is a little too hawaiian for my taste and though you can't see them there are random age spots all over it. The skirt in the above photos I've had since late high school or early college, I can't remember. And the bathing suit is definitely an old bikini I bought from J.Crew back in high school. Ha. As per usual, we were working with what we have!

I wonder what we'll do next time we get together...

a vintage floral dress

A few weeks ago I stopped by a local thrift store {SC Thrift & Resale} to look for some
things for my new apartment. This store is also a women's co-op and in one of the booths
I found this fabulous handmade silk vintage dress from I believe the 50's.

I went home for a friends wedding in early September so I convinced my little sister, Shani, to
visit our parents the same week so that she could drive back with me to Charleston and spend a week with me here. A few days before the wedding we decided to go on a little practice shoot. She's been trying to take more photo's outside since most of her work is done indoors for headshots.

Above:
Just one of the photo's she took. Visit her blog to see the rest of the photo's here
I wore it with one of our mothers belts {that I stole and took home with me} from her days of being a Doncaster sales rep, my starfish bracelet from Anthropologie, and some vintage earings.
PS that cigarette was just a prop...
it was totally weird and awkward pretending to know what I was doing. Ha.

Below:
I wore it to our friends wedding... but just to the ceremony since the skirt is very fitted
and since I love to dance {like, a lot} I did not want to ruin it at the reception!
With some of my best long time girlfriends Chelsey, Kate, Jen, Lindsay and Lauren
{don't I have beautiful friends!}

Be sure to check out the rest of the photo's from the spontaneous shoot with my sister... here

We have another one planned for while she's here in Charleston so check back soon!

favorite summer dress

A few years ago I made myself a green rayon very easy to wear and very comfortable dress.
{shown below}
It's a favorite because it's so light, I wear it with or without a belt, depending on how tight I tie it the length changes, it washes and irons well, and it looks great with flats, sandals, heels and boots!

At Caesar's Palace in Vegas, though I don't think Caesar ever actually lived there.

After wearing the green dress a million times I finally decided I should make another one... in Pink!
tada!
photo taken by the lovely Emily Everett

And much like the green one, I've worn this a ton already...
here, on my way out the door to meet some friends
took this using Instagram... follow me @heyitsJenima

What color should I make next?
Or should it be a pattern?!
Maybe I'll make it into a maxi dress next time!
